·         The sacredness of marriage: Marriage is the oldest institution established by God himself in the Garden of Eden. It is not like dating where you can easily quit. In marriage both of you become one flesh.
·         Happiness: There is no happier relationship than yours and so don’t think that the green light you’re seeing outside your home will lead you to a happier relationship. Make your family homely and you’ll be happy.

Okay let us now delve into the crux of the matter on how to save a marriage on the brink of divorce.
#1. Stop the blame Game
When you feel like your marriage is collapsing, don’t immediately point accusing fingers at your spouse. Take time and consider your own contributions to the cause of the problem. Be matured to own up to your wrong and try to better your own part first. No one enjoys being called ‘the bad one’.

 #2. Stop making comparisons
There is no perfect marriage. That flourishing marriage you envy is simply a family that knows how not to wash their dirty linens in the public. Stop making that unhealthy comparison, it will only lead you to envy and ungodly ideas. Take time to make your home the best it can be. Invest in your family by reading books and online guides as you’re doing now.

#3. Engage a marriage therapist
Nigerian couples prefer going to religious leaders to counsellors or marriage therapists. Well whichever, just make sure the person is abreast enough with family matters. Try to practise their suggestions and make sure to go with your partner if possible.

#4. Reminisce your early days
Good memories renew love and filters hatred. Casting your mind back to your early days will help put you back to track – the very reason you loved the person and the promises you made to each other. All these will open up your heart to accept your spouse back.

 #5. Forgive
Forgiveness loosens the fetters of hate in your heart and gives your reason to reconsider. Without forgiveness, you cannot think aright. You have to forgive both yourself and your spouse, don’t sink in self-pity. Growth comes with change and change can be painful at times.

 #6. Dialogue
One of the best ways to resolve conflict in any institution is through dialogue. Listen to your spouse to hear his/her own part of the story no matter how much you’ve been hurt. It is very imperative to always give a listening ear, not just to hear the words but the expressions and feelings. Know when to give space and when to engage.

 #7. Resort to prayer
No matter what don’t forget this verse “Unless the Lord builds the house, its builders labour in vain” Psalm 127:1. Let God be the pillar of your home.
